About Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage

The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement and Modernization Act of 2003 paved the way to bring much-needed prescription drug coverage to people with Medicare. Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (sometimes referred to as “Medicare Part D”) works differently than Medicare Part A or Part B. To get this coverage, you’ll choose a plan such as First Health Part D that is contracted to provide prescription drug coverage.

Key dates to know:

November 15 is the first day someone Medicare-eligible can enroll or switch into a Medicare prescription drug plan.

December 31 is the last day you can enroll (unless you qualify for an exception).

January 1 is the first day you can use your Medicare prescription drug benefit, if you enrolled between November 15 and December 31 of each year.
